John Luisi was brought to Staten Island's verdant shores in 1963 by his hardworking parents. His father, Herbert, born and bred in Brooklyn, was a life-long civil servant, starting as a clerk in the mailroom at City Hall. He always worked a second job to help make ends meet. But Dad still managed to find the time to coach the Little League team, and take the family to Staten Island's numerous parks. John's mother, Lillian, also worked outside the home at times, but primarily kept the Old Town home neat and together despite the best efforts of John and his siblings. Mom did not finish high school, in order to work at the family store in Maine, but she always placed a great emphasis on hard work and education for her children. Lillian was always active in the PTA at whatever school her children attended. Widowed in 1997, Mom now lives in sunny San Diego.
Hard work, education, family and giving back became the cornerstones of John's life. In 1964, he started kindergarten at P.S. 48 in Concord, and upon graduation moved on to Junior High School 49 in Stapleton before attending New Dorp H.S. Along the way, he won enough spelling bees, science fairs and scholastic awards to wallpaper the family hallway. John participated in numerous extra-curricular activities, from the photography club and the color guard, to Boy's State and Key Club as Lt. Governor. Like many young people in the days when it snowed in winter, John shoveled snow for the neighbors, and established a small lawn-mowing business, worked at Roald's Ski 'n' Bike Shop and then Martin Paints.
Apparently not needing much sleep, John also participated in many sports, but he had a terrible lay-up shot, refused to wear his glasses when playing baseball (and hence never made it out of the minors at S.I.L.L.), and was always part of the "B" squad on Bill Welsh's track team. But John always enjoyed riding his bicycle everywhere.
John's academic success and community involvement caught the attention of Columbia College, which he attended with the aid of scholarships. After graduation, John worked for four years as an Assistant to the Commissioner at the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development, and moved to St. George. John then attended Fordham Law School, and since graduating in 1988, has undertaken countless pro bono cases throughout New York. His run for Staten Island Borough President is the culmination of a passionate career and lifestyle of working to improve the quality of life for all Staten Islanders.
As a lifetime resident of Staten Island, John Luisi understands and identifies with the issues that are most important to Staten Islanders. John spearheaded the campaign to increase ferry service to and from Staten Island. Through his tireless community involvement, John has spent his entire life working to ensure the residents of Staten Island continue to enjoy the quality of life that makes those communities such a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
John Luisi brought the Farmer's Market to the St. George Municipal Parking Lot and fought inappropriate development in the area. As a member of the Protector of Pine Oaks Woods, John Luisi has participated in numerous tree plantings and trail cleanups. As a founding member of the Downtown Staten Island Council, John Luisi has been at the forefront of encouraging the redevelopment of the Bay Street/Richmond Terrace corridor as a viable place to live, work, and play. Whether it's the revitalization of the PTA of P.S. 16, community trash-buster clean-ups, blood drives at New Dorp High School, graduating the Citizen's Police Academy, or being certified in First Aide & CPR, John Luisi embodies the full spirit of community organizing.
As a lawyer, John Luisi helps those in great need through his work with Legal Services of New York, the Pro Bono Society of the Bar Association of the City of New York, and the Child Advocacy Society. John Luisi has dedicated his time to assiduously working for those who cannot help themselves.
The experience that John Luisi has gained has been instrumental in helping him win community battles he will continue to use his expertise to win victories at Borough Hall. John Luisi has the experience and intelligence needed to be a strong and effective leader. To measure up as a candidate for borough president requires more than having served in public office before. It takes leadership, integrity, and a willingness to tirelessly serve the people of Staten Island. It is clear that John Luisi embodies those qualities.
John resides in St. George with his wife, Eileen. John's son Alex graduated from Msgr. Farrell H.S. as the salutatorian in 2008 and now attends Stanford University.
